'Annabelle: Creation' tops the box office; audiences don't go nuts for 'Nut Job 2'
The weekend gave us two new sequels opening in wide release. One of them did well. The other… not so much. The former film is one Annabelle: Creation, which opened in spot number one with $35 million against a $15 million budget. That gives it the lowest opening in the Conjuring franchise, but only by a smidge; the first Annabelle bowed to $37.1 million in 2014. Needless to say, the continued good fortunes of the series bodes well for its upcoming installments, The Conjuring 3 and The Nun.
Less capable of drawing in audiences was The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature, which opened to $8.9 million. That puts it behind number two finisher Dunkirk, which was pushed over the $150 million mark domestically by its $11.4 million fourth weekend haul. Even worse for The Nut Job 2: That $8.9 million was on a whopping 4,003 million screens, bringing the per-theatre average to an abysmal $2,232 million. By comparison, Annabelle: Creation’s was $10,006. The highest PTA of the weekend belonged to new limited release Ingrid Goes West, which made $141,216 on three screens.
Rounding out the top five were The Dark Tower (weekend gross $7.8 million, total gross $34.3 million), tumbling swiftly down the top five in its second week of release, and The Emoji Movie (weekend gross $6.6 million, total gross $63.5 million).
There was one other new wide release that hit theatres over the weekend: Lionsgate’s The Glass Castle, which bowed to $4.8 million on 1,461 screens. That’s below industry expectations, but an A- CinemaScore could indicate a decent hold in the coming weeks and, later, on home video.
On the higher end of the limited release spectrum, Indian film Toilet: Ek Prem Katha opened to $709,420 on 175 screens. New international cinema also includes Korea’s A Taxi Driver ($332,000 on 41 screens) and China’s Once Upon a Time ($256,500 on 51 screens). Good Time ($137,625), The Only Living Boy in New York ($57, 619) and The Trip to Spain ($45,306) also opened in limited release.
