Every day actors and other artists arrive in Los Angeles, lured by the prospect of employment in film and television. And every day, it seems, another of these folks discovers one of Southern California’s best-kept secrets: its thriving year-round theater scene, which by our count regularly mounts more annual productions than New York, Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco combined. It remains a strong and growing community, even with the country’s economic downturn. Southern California theater has become a bona fide local industry, with increasing audiences and numbers of union contracts.
We at Back Stage have been doing our small part to support that industry with this annual theater guide, an indispensable listing of theaters, companies, and production services for theater professionals: playwrights, composers, directors, designers, and actors. We hope you find this year’s edition useful. If you notice that anything in these listings is missing or incorrect, please email pete.keeley@backstage.com so we can get it right next time. Keep us posted about moves, closures, hires, fires—and, of course, your opening nights. We’ll see you at the theater. Listings compiled by Michael Coughlin and Pete Keeley DEFINITIONS: Membership: Theater maintains an active company or ensemble of actors and generally casts productions from that pool. Open: Each show is cast on an open basis. Limited: Theater casts on an open policy under limited or special circumstances, usually when a part cannot be cast from existing company members. KEY TO SYMBOLS & ABBREVIATIONS: R: Theater is available for rent. R-VA: Rental with variable availability. H&R: Headshots and résumés accepted. M :Accepts manuscripts. VALET If you are renting from a theater without a parking lot or its own valet service, you may opt to hire a valet service on your own. Most companies provide valets at a rate between $13 and $18 per hour per attendant—that’s for free valet parking for your guests. If you decide to let your patrons pay the valets directly, then the amount collected will be deducted from your prearranged fee. Negotiate that in advance, as some companies do not charge guests directly. The number of attendants will depend on the number of patrons you expect: typically one attendant for each 15 cars. Make sure the company is insured. Also, when you call, have as much information as possible regarding the area around the theater: If you can make the attendants’ job easier by finding a nearby lot for them to park in, they will often give you a discount on the hourly rate. Some companies need as many as three weeks or more advance notice; many need only a few days. It is always a good idea to check with the theater owner to see if he or she can recommend a valet service company. But we offer to list—as part of our weekly publication—any stage tech job openings a theater has for a $30 fee per notice. So remember, if you are going to put on a show and you have a need for a cast member or a technical person, be sure to get your information to us by Friday, 1:30 p.m., for the following Thursday’s issue. You can fill out a casting/crew notice form at our website, under the Casting & Jobs tab. If you have any questions, contact the casting department at bswcasting@backstage.com. When you’ve got witches who need to boil and toil and trouble, you’ll need a cauldron, some dry ice, and probably some good wax noses and warts. Eerie lighting and a blasted heath will help—and the sound of howling banshees wouldn’t hurt. You get the idea. Here’s a list of places to go in the L.A. area to rent the right set piece, light instrument, sound setup, or natty period threads. Some of the companies below fit into multiple categories, but we don’t double or triple list them.
