Mathäser Munich hosts ICTA seminar
The ICTA European Office announced the dates for its technical seminar in Munich, Germany. After the evening Get2gether on Jan. 23, a full day is planned, with top-of-mind topics such as “Cinema of the Future,” “Virtual Reality” and “Big Data,” according to organizer Thomas Rüttgers.
The third event of its kind is scheduled during the Münchner Filmwoche at Mathäser Filmpalast, one of the country’s highest grossing theatres. It follows ICTA’s California seminar at Universal City Hilton, Los Angeles, from Jan. 16-18, 2017. In addition to a well-deserved tribute honoring Ioan Allen of Dolby Laboratories, tech themes and manufacturers presentations include updates on the networked cinema, alcohol in movie theatres, and the impact of digital signage on concession sales. Also on the agenda is a mixing presentation and demo on the Hitchcock Stage at Universal Studios.
For the Future, Berlinale Looks at Films Past
During the 67th Berlin International Film Festival (Feb. 9-19, 2017), the annual Retrospective is dedicated to science-fiction movies, “one of the most visually stunning and spectacular genres in the history of film.” In addition to classics and cult films, the festival promises, the 27-title-strong lineup also offers “some unknown productions” from places like Japan, as well as Central and Eastern Europe.
Under the heading of “Future Imperfect. Science · Fiction · Film,” the Retrospective has grouped films around two themes—the society of the future, and the strange and Other. In the latter group, Himmelskibet (A Trip to Mars) from Denmark premiered in 1918, making it one of the earliest science-fiction films ever shot.
85 Countries Salute Academy’s 60 Years
During its 60th Anniversary year, the Foreign Language Film Category of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences welcomed submissions from no less than 85 countries. Among the contenders, I Am Nojoom, Age 10 and Divorced marks the first-ever entry from Yemen. To celebrate the 1956 introduction of the category, when Fellini’s La Strada was named the recipient, the Academy created a complete playlist of acceptance speeches and a poster gallery
After the titles were announced, European Film Promotion presented 26 of the European films that were submitted. The goal behind the screenings at the Wilshire Screening Room in Beverly Hills, Calif., is “offering Academy members, journalists, U.S. distributors and international buyers a tailor-made opportunity to watch a great selection,” the Hamburg, Germany-based organization said. “With its wide selection of genres and subjects,” including the first stop-motion animation film My Life As a Zucchini (France), these screenings “are bound to provide unexpected surprises.”
The campaign is supported financially by the Creative Europe–MEDIA Programme of the European Union and the participating EFP member organizations.
Ymagis Group Acquires DSAT Cinema
Ymagis Group, the European specialist in digital technologies for the cinema industry, announced its acquisition of Eutelsat’s 50.2% stake in DSAT Cinema, making Ymagis the sole shareholder now. “I am delighted that we have completed…an important step in our market consolidation strategy,” said Group CEO and chairman Jean Mizrah. “The integration of the various delivery platforms has allowed us on one hand to become the undisputed leader in digital content delivery across Europe with over 3,300 connected cinemas.”
DSAT Cinema reported €3.9 million (US$94.22 mil.) in revenue for the 2015-2016 fiscal year that ended June 30, 2016.
Scarlett Serves Yummy Popcorn
While the pages of this magazine are usually not devoted to celebrity news, this column will make a notable exception for one of the screen’s most interesting sirens. (Just take a look at the first international trailer for Ghost in the Shell.) Especially after she launched a popcorn emporium in Paris, France.
At the end of October, Scarlett Johansson and her husband Romain Dauriac opened Yummy Pop, right in the heart of Le Marais. “It has been a dream of mine and my family for several years to bring our favorite American snack to our favorite European city,” Johansson noted about this “labor of love and Epicurean enthusiasm.”
On the latter note, the flavors will change with the seasons, as fresh ingredients become available, she added. Other flavors, created in collaboration with Chef Will Horowitz of Ducks Eatery and Harry & Ida’s Meat and Supply Company in New York City, will remain as staples/classics. Among the initial offerings you will find Sea Salt and Olive Oil, Real Vermont Cheddar (Romain’s favorite), Strawberries and Cream (a favorite of Romain’s sister, manager of Yummy Pop) and Truffle Parmesan and Sage (Scarlett’s favorite).
All the popcorn is popped and mixed fresh to order on the premises. Sounds like a recipe for success everybody in theatrical exhibition can relate to.
