CineAsia 2018: Exhibitors gather in Hong Kong to celebrate a strong Asian market
The Asian cinema market continues to be one of the strongest and most essential in the world—one key reason why the annual CineAsia convention continues to be such an important gathering of motion picture exhibitors. This year’s show at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, running Dec. 10-13, offers four full days of exciting and informative programming (plus a lot of networking opportunities and fun events).
Paramount Pictures International, Twentieth Century Fox International, Universal Pictures International, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International and Warner Bros. Pictures International will all offer previews of their upcoming releases, along with regional players Bona Films (China), Huayi Brothers (China), Lotte Cinemas (Korea), Unifrance films and Creative Europe (France) and Wanda Pictures (China). Feature presentations will include Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet, Paramount’s Bumblebee, Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and Warner Bros.’ Aquaman.
The convention kicks off on Monday, Dec. 10 with a keynote address by Dr. Man-Nang Chong, founder, chairman and CEO of GDC Technology, followed by a “Focus on China” and its latest technical innovations, presented by China Film Company. The afternoon session zeroes in on Indonesia, one of the fastest-growing countries in the region; see page 52 for a preview of the panelists’ insights.
Tuesday morning brings an executive roundtable on exhibition’s role in movie marketing. Other can’t-miss events at CineAsia include Wednesday morning’s business sessions on “Sustainable Technology to Wow Audiences” with GDC’s Dr. Chong and Cinionic CEO Wim Buyens, and Asian exhibitors on best-in-class service; Christie’s Wednesday afternoon laser demo; and Thursday morning’s discussion with Dolby Laboratories on e-sports presentations.
CineAsia University begins at noon Tuesday on the tradeshow floor, with presentations from GDC Technology and DTS and a session on “Global Marketing and the Search for New Audiences.” CineAsia U continues on Wednesday afternoon with a Dolby update on immersive sound and a Christie session on the value of technical training.
Delegates will of course want to check out all the new products, concession offerings and groundbreaking technologies at the tradeshow, commencing 11 a.m. Tuesday and ending 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
The show culminates with the Thursday lunch and awards ceremony. This year’s honorees include Joe Chang of Ambassador Theatres as “Exhibitor of the Year,” Fu Ruoqing of Huaxia Film Distribution as “Distributor of the Year,” and veteran producer-distributor Bill Kong, winner of the “Icon Award.” The Motion Picture Association’s Asia-Pacific Copyright Educator Award goes to “Pokémon” producer Masakazu Kubo, and Disney’s Avengers: Infinity War will be acknowledged with comScore’s Asia-Pacific Box-Office Achievement Award.
