Jury unveils six European Film Award winners

While the other nominees announced at the Seville International Film Festival (listed here) eagerly await the 26th European Film Awards on Dec. 7 in Berlin, the seven-member jury elected winners in several categories. This new procedure follows a decision of the EFA board to “draw more attention to the award recipients” in these categories: Cinematography (Asaf Sudry, Fill the Void, Israel), Production Design (Sarah Greenwood, Anna Karenina, U.K.), Sound Design (Matz Müller and Erik Mischijew, Paradise: Faith, Austria/Germany/France), Costume Design (Paco Delgado, Blancanieves, Spain/France), Editing (Cristiano Travaglioli, The Great Beauty, Italy/France) and Composing (Ennio Morricone, The Best Offer, Italy). The latter three titles also vie for awards for director and European film of 2013.

European Film Promotes Oscar Contenders
Once again, European Film Promotion is “going to generate the greatest attention possible for several European films during the forthcoming awards season.” Included in the record lineup of 14 titles selected to represent their countries in the Foreign Language Film Award race is Drasko Durovic’s Ace of Spades—Bad Destiny, marking the first time that Montenegro submitted a film as an independent country.

Since 2008, EFP Screenings in Los Angeles have presented over 60 films in conjunction with the American Film Market. In addition to the Oscar contenders, EFP backed another 25 films from 11 European countries with Film Sales Support as well as, in its 15th consecutive year, hosting an umbrella office for 17 European production and sales companies from nine countries. Funded by the MEDIA Programme of the EU, all three initiatives were created “to boost the presence and sales of European films during this important international market,” EFP noted.

dcinex Branches Out to Ukraine

After opening an office in Russia, dcinex, the pan-European provider of “fully integrated and best-in-class solutions for movie operations,” is branching out into Ukraine. Headed by and co-owned by Alex Kolesnichenko, dcinex Ukraine LLC will offer services to exhibition initially, including equipment sales, installation, monitoring and maintenance as well as remote and on-site support. Kolesnichenko noted how dcinex’s “exceptional knowledge gathered during the large-scale d-cinema rollout across Europe will be highly beneficial to the Ukrainian cinema operators.”

Sony Extends German VPF
Sony Digital Cinema announced that its VPF program will continue in Deutschland until March 2014. With a particular focus on independent cinemas with limited movement on first-run product, Sony also offers financing with full support services and a ten-year warranty. A recent case in point was the Lu-Li Kino that has been entertaining its hometown of Sulzbach-Rosenberg for more than 50 years. Its current owners, the Heistetter family, just converted the first of three screens with Sony’s SRX-R515 4K projector, server and TMS.

Weischer Pins Digital on Pinn
Julian Pinn, the digital specialist and former head of cinema marketing at Dolby EMEA, will serve as technical strategic consultant to Weischer.Mediengruppe. The Hamburg, Germany-based cinema advertising and marketing agency is looking for his expertise “in all matters related to the digital process chain in the cinema,” the company said. Managing director Florian Weischer sees “significant potential” in the arrangement. “Julian is intimately acquainted with the scene—he knows all of the leading cinema operators, film distributors and technology providers... This gives us the opportunity to also adapt existing and new digital solutions to international markets.”

IMAX Showcases Kent
Operating 20 locations in the United Kingdom, including three Cinema de Lux venues, Showcase Cinemas will install its first IMAX auditorium at the Bluewater Shopping Centre in Kent, England. An IMAX partner since 2001 with five large-format theatres in the United States, Brazil and Argentina, “we have seen firsthand how IMAX drives incremental revenue for an entire theatre complex,” said Shari Redstone, president of Massachusetts-based corporate parent National Amusements Inc. “We are pleased National Amusements is expanding its IMAX footprint to the U.K.—particularly to a site that ranks among the nation’s five highest-grossing multiplexes,” noted Andrew Cripps, president, IMAX EMEA.

Cinema City Centers on Gdanski
Cinema City, the largest multiplex cinema operator in Central and Eastern Europe and Israel (100 multiplexes with 974 screens in seven countries), signed a lease for a six-screen complex in Starogard Gdanski, Poland. In addition to 31 cinemas with 339 screens (including five IMAX 3D theatres and one 4DX auditorium) already up and running across the country, chief executive officer Mooky Greidinger has agreements for another eight and 88 screens firmly in place.

Egyptian Cinemas Digitize with Kinoton
A dozen Kinoton Digital Cinema Systems were installed in the largest cinemas of Cairo and Alexandria, the Germering, Germany-based technology providers reported. Cairo’s Stars Cinema Co., which owns the City Stars Cinema 16, also had its Golden Stars theatre equipped. Local Kinoton distributor Waves Inc. installed two DCP 30 MX II as well as three cost-effective, smaller-screen DCP SX II solutions. In order not “to lose the capability of showing local analog film productions as well,” Kinoton said, “all existing Kinoton film projectors were also left in place.” The Green Plaza in Alexandria installed three each of the 30 LX and 30 MX lines and “reserved an extra DCP 30 LX II for open-air events and other special uses.”

Cornwell Fest Monkeys Around
In its 12th year, the Cornwell Film Festival once again screened “some of the best feature films that have been shown at the most prestigious film festivals in the world…and which would not otherwise reach the big screen in Cornwall.” And while the Lighthouse Cinema in Newquay has a very nice screen indeed, the good folks at Wild Futures, a U.K. charity promoting the welfare and conservation of primates, invited us to check out a short film about the home they created for the victims of the pet trade. Director Chris Jones stated, “The film was made to highlight the important work that ‘The Monkey Sanctuary’ carries out on a daily basis and without which many primates would continue to suffer tremendous neglect.” After the festival screening, the short is now available on YouTube.

Saluting a Trailer Music Master

Of the many amazing programs and presentations, not to mention all the special guests and films available during the November SoundTrack_Cologne 10 (Conference on Music and Sound in Film and the Media), we picked just one. Yoav Goren, “the Magician of Trailer Music,” will be in the German city to talk about the success of his “unique sound, created from orchestra, choir and contemporary electronic music.” Naming Goren’s recent works—including After Earth, Argo, Cloud Atlas, The Hobbit, Iron Man 3, The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises—organizers further opined, “The list of film trailers…is as long as it is impressive.” Since scoring his first trailer in 1993 for Carlito’s Way, there is “no getting around Yoav Goren nowadays.” His company, Immediate Music, has over 5,000 placements in film, television, commercials and videogames on record.
