Jennifer Lawrence On Board for 'East of Eden' Remake

Oct 3, 2013

"It" girl of the moment Jennifer Lawrence has officially signed on for the new East of Eden adaptation, to be directed by her Hunger Games director Gary Ross. Based on John Steinbeck’s Nobel-Prize winning novel, Eden recounts the misadventures of the Hamilton and Trask families over the course of two generations in California’s Salinas Valley.

Lawrence will play Cathy Ames, an influential (and not in a good way) character who figures prominently in the first half of Steinbeck’s allegory for the Book of Genesis. Jo Van Fleet originally popularized the role (and won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for it) in the 1955 classic adaptation, which starred James Dean and was directed by Elia Kazan.

This time around, Universal is producing the movie Ross has agreed to release in two parts. Though many fans of the book wouldn’t necessarily consider Cathy a main character – her role is larger in the first part of the sprawling story – it’s been passed along through the grapevine Lawrence has been eager to re-team with her HG collaborator Ross on a new project.

To tide you over until J-Law goes literary highbrow, you can catch her in the second installment of the Hunger Games franchise, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, on Nov. 22.
