'Shrek' pushes PPI past $1 bil at int'l B.O.

LONDON -- Paramount Pictures International (PPI), the studio's overseas releasing arm, pushed past the $1 billion mark at the international boxoffice this year, a week earlier than it did in 2009.
PPI said Thursday it has powered past the billion dollar benchmark after a $42.6 million weekend for "Shrek Forever After" across a slew of territories including U.K./Ireland, France, Germany and Korea.
PPI said it is the second fastest billion dollar reach since its launch as a standalone operation in 2007, only beaten by 2008's record.
In 2008 the overseas' releasing arm went on to garner $2 billion internationally.
The final film in the "Shrek" franchise has laughed up an international cume of $140 million to date.
PPI's coffers have also been boosted with a $262 million boxoffice cume to date for the release of DreamWorks Animation's "How To Train Your Dragon." That film is scheduled to roll out in Japan at the beginning of August.
Other hits include Marvel Studios' "Iron Man 2," with a $100 million launch weekend on April 28 and Peter Jackson's adaptation of Alice Sebold's novel "The Lovely Bones" which grossed $48.9 million at the international boxoffice during 2010.
Jason Reitman's awards season favorite "Up In The Air" flew to $81.1 million for PPI while Martin Scorsese's Leonardo DiCaprio starrer "Shutter Island" proved the pairs' most successful collaboration yet scaring up $167 million at the international boxoffice, with $126.4m coming from PPI-released territories.
