CineAsia to honor Korean star Byung Hun Lee

Nov 27, 2012

International television and film star Byung Hun Lee will be honored with the “Star of the Year” Award at the CineAsia 2012 Awards Luncheon on Thursday, Dec. 13, at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong.

Robert H. Sunshine, managing director of the annual convention, stated, “Mr. Lee is a wonderful actor who has delighted television audiences and moviegoers not only in Asia, but internationally as well.”

Byung Hun Lee is recognized as one of the starters of the “Korean Boom” in television and film. Known as one of the “Four Kings” in Japan, Lee is the only actor to sell out the Tokyo Dome with 45,000 screaming fans. Having completed a 70,000-fan arena tour in Japan in 2007, he has successfully finished another tour in 2011.

Lee started his acting career in 1991 with a Korean TV drama “Asphalt, My Hometown.” Since then he has acted in many dramas on the small screen including “Tomorrow Love,” “Police”, “Son of Wind”, “Happy Together”, “Beautiful Days”, “All In” and "Iris.”

Although much of his early success came from television dramas, Lee’s real passion was for making films on the big screen. The Good, the Bad, and the Weird and I Come With the Rain premiered in 2008. Lee's critically acclaimed film I Saw the Devil premiered in 2011 at the Sundance Film Festival.

Lee's first Hollywood film was Paramount Pictures’ GI Joe: Rise of Cobra in 2010. He recently completed filming GI Joe 2: Retaliation with a U.S. release date of March 29, 2013; a new 3D trailer and special footage will premiere at CineAsia. Lee’s first Korean period piece, Masquerade, premiered internationally in September 2012 and became the fourth highest-grossing film to date in Korea. In June 2012, he had his hand and footprints imprinted in front of the world-famous Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, a first for an Asian actor. He is currently shooting Red 2 in London.

On Oct. 30, Lee won Best Actor honors at the Grand Bell Awards (Korea’s equivalent to the Academy Awards) for Masquerade. The film took a record 15 awards.

CineAsia 2012 will take place Dec. 11-13 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. It will feature screenings of upcoming Hollywood films, sponsored events, timely seminars and a tradeshow.
