Former AMC legal VP Phil Pennington dies

Feb 17, 2010

Phil Pennington, former VP, legal, at AMC Entertainment, passed away on Feb. 16 at his home in Weatherby Lake, Missouri.

After graduating from Texas Christian University with a Bachelor’s degree in history and philosophy and a MBA in management and marketing, Penn honed his passion for the movie industry as a theatre manager for National Amusements and AMC (University Square Theatres, in Madison, Wis.). He moved to Boston to work for National Amusements as the assistant to the director of theatre operations, where he managed all phases for indoor and drive-in theatre and flea market operations for the company.

In 1981, Penn returned to the Midwest to attend law school at Washburn University, where he graduated with honors in 1983. He re-entered the exhibition industry to work for AMC as an operations manager for the Southeast division, where he was responsible for about 50 theatres.

He was later promoted to VP, administration and special projects, and took on many roles at AMC’s Kansas City headquarters, including concessions marketing and purchasing and management of the company’s security and internal audit departments. He later turned his focus toward administering compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. He was named VP, legal, in December 2002.

FJI sends its condolences to Pennington’s family and AMC colleagues.
