Cinemex to receive ShowEast International Achievement Award

June 5, 2013

Grupo Cinemex will be honored with the “International Achievement Award in Exhibition” at this year’s ShowEast Convention at the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa in Hollywood, Florida, as part of the ShowEast International Day Awards Ceremony on Oct. 21.

“ShowEast is thrilled to recognize Cinemex as an innovative leader in exhibition,” stated Robert Sunshine, managing director of the ShowEast. “By making the moviegoing experience a total entertainment experience for its guests, Cinemex has shown that tremendous growth can be achieved by making customers’ needs and desires their main priority.”

Cinemex was founded in 1995 with the intention of revolutionizing the movie entertainment industry in Mexico by installing multiplexes and stadium-style seating. Grupo Cinemex is the result of a fusion between MMCinemas, Lumiere and Cinemex. Today, with more than 17 years of operations throughout Mexico, Cinemex constitutes the fifth-largest movie theatre chain in the world, with 217 theatres and 1,958 screens. In 2012 alone, these theatres achieved attendance of 66 million, which represents a growth rate of 15% vs. 2011.

Cinemex has grown at an annual rate of 34%, from 68 locations in 2009, to 217 in 2013. The expansion plans for this year include the opening of 20 new theatres and the acquisition of 31 Cinemark complexes. This last transaction is subject to authorization by the Mexican Federal Competition Commission. Cinemex is planning to end 2013 with 271 theatres. This year, the company also plans to transform 200 screens to its Premium concept, which offers more spacious seats and food orders delivered to guests inside the theatre.

ShowEast 2013 will take place Oct. 21-24, 2013, and will feature screenings of upcoming holiday films, sponsored events, seminars and a tradeshow.

Hunger Games - Mockingjay Pt 1
Film Review: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1

Darker, less action-packed first half of the final installment of the popular franchise moves from arenas to rubble aplenty as Jennifer Lawrence’s super-heroine is called upon to serve her beleaguered and much-destroyed nation as propaganda instrument and leader. Fans of the books and previous two films get a less flashy palette here, but the engaging characters and strong story return to stir interest for the scheduled November 2015 finale. More »
