Ballantyne produces customized 3D screen for 'Hobbit' premiere

Dec 12, 2012

Ballantyne Strong’s Strong/MDI cinema screen manufacturing business produced the specialty movie screen for the Embassy Theatre’s world premiere of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in Wellington, New Zealand.

The silver screen was created in conjunction with leading 3D technology company RealD, featuring specially engineered flake coating for enhanced brightness and producing a 1.6 gain. The Hobbit is the first feature film to be both produced and projected in RealD’s High Frame Rate 3D (HFR 3D) at a speed of 48 frames per second, double the conventional speed of 24 FPS.

Ballantyne completed the Guinness world record-setting IMAX screen earlier this year at The Panasonic IMAX Theatre at Darling Harbour in Sydney, Australia.
