CineAsia to honor PVR's Ajay Bijli as 'Exhibitor of the Year'

Ajay Bijli, chairman and managing director of PVR Limited, will receive the “Exhibitor of the Year” Award at the CineAsia awards ceremony on Dec. 14 at the Grand Hyatt in Hong Kong.

“PVR has built a culture of innovation for cinema, changing the moviegoing experience in India,” said Andrew Sunshine, VP of The Film Expo Group, which manages CineAsia. “Bijli has proven to be a pioneer in the industry and we congratulate him on this well-deserved honor.”

In 1995 Bijli started PVR Cinemas,now the largest cinema exhibition chain in India. The company began as a joint-venture agreementwith Village Roadshow, a global film production and exhibition company based in Australia, and within a few years PVR established the multiplex format in India. In 2012, the company acquired Cinemax and it took over DT Cinemas in 2016.The brand currently serves approximately 75 million moviegoers and has 579 screens across India.

Bijlicompleted his Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce (Honours) from Hindu College of Delhi and shortly after pursued the Owner/President Management Program at Harvard Business School. Hereceived the “Asia Innovator of the Year” award at the 2016 India Business Leader Awards, and Images Retail honored him as the “Most Admired Retailer of the Year” for 2016. In addition to these recent honors, Bijlihas also received prestigious awards such as E&Y Entrepreneurial Award for Business Transformation, CNBC's Emerging India Award, and “Most Admired Multiplex Professional” from CMO Asia’s Multiplex Excellence Awards. Under his leadership, PVR Limited has also received Fortune India’s “Next 500” Big and Mid-size Companies Award.

Bijliis on the board of trustees of theMumbai Academy of the Moving Image(MAMI) and is a founding member of FICCI Multiplex Association (India). He is also a member ofthe Film and TV Producers Guild (India) and Young Presidents’ Organization and is associated with the Central Board of Film Certification, Government of India.

CineAsia will be held December 12-14 at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre in Hong Kong. The convention will feature product presentations and screenings of major upcoming films, exclusive sponsored events, seminars on current and future trends, and a tradeshow.
