ShowEast to honor Mexican star Martha Higareda
Martha Higareda will receive the 2015 “International Star of the Year” Award at ShowEast during the International Awards Luncheon on Oct. 13 at the Diplomat Resort and Spa in Hollywood, Florida.
“We are delighted to present this first-ever International Star of the Year Award to Ms. Higareda for her extraordinary talents and remarkable career over the past decade. She has truly earned a reputation that now extends into the U.S market,” remarked Andrew Sunshine, co-managing director, The Film Expo Group.
The daughter of actress Martha Cervantes and artist Jose Luis Higareda, Higareda made her film debut in 2002’s Amar Te Duele ("Love Hurts"). This highly acclaimed Mexican film was a huge success and catapulted her into stardom. Her role in Amar Te Duele landed Higareda several awards, including the Silver Goddess "Revelation Actress" from the Mexican Cinema Journalists and an MTV Latino Movie Award for Favorite Actress.
Shortly thereafter, Higareda appeared in Casa de los Babys (2003) and several TV shows, including “Enamórate” (2003) and “Las Juanas” (2004) before starring in another well-received Mexican movie, 7 Días (2005). Her next role was in the Carlos Carrera film Sexo, Amor y Otras Perversiones (2006), which earned her a second nomination for the Silver Goddess award. In 2007, Higareda starred as Adela, a punk teenager who dreams about being an actress, in the box-office hit comedy Niñas Mal (2007), directed by Fernando Sariňana. That year she also received an Ariel Awards nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Fuera del Cielo (2006). In 2007, Higareda starred in the thriller Borderland, directed by Zev Berman.
Higareda’s box-office success in Mexico has helped her cross over into American productions such as Street Kings opposite Forrest Whitaker, Hugh Laurie and Keanu Reeves; Smoking Aces 2, Mariachi Gringo, and most recently opposite Kevin Costner and Maria Bello in the Walt Disney Studios feature McFarland, which was produced by Mark Ciardi and Gordon Grey of Mayhem Pictures and directed by Niki Caro.
International television credits include“Hawaii Five-0,” “CSI Miami” and “Royal Pains.” In 2010, Higareda received the Best Actress/Television Imagen Award for her role in Lifetime Television’s Lies in Plain Sight.
Higareda has also branched out as a writer and producer, having worked on many international television series and movies of her own through her production company, Neverending Media.
A highlight in her career, Higareda wrote, produced and starred in 2014’s Casese Quien Pueda, a film which has since gone on to be the third highest-grossing Mexican comedy of all time.
ShowEast takes place Oct. 12-15 and will feature screenings of major upcoming films, sponsored events, timely seminars and a trade show.
