German Films are showcased in China

The third time might be even more charming after German Films and the Goethe-Institut kicked off their film festival in Beijing on Nov. 13 (Kino Broadway, Goethe-Institut in “798”), before going on tour to Chengdu (Stellar Cinema, Sichuan Film & Television University), Qingdao and Shenzhen (Broadway Cinema locations in both cities). Last year, more than 6,000 people came to see “the latest in German filmmaking,” the Munich-based film support organization noted. “China is a highly promising film market with an enormous potential for growth.” German Films has been active in China for the past 12 years and is represented by Anke Redl.

Apart from the “Focus Germany” program at the Shanghai International Film Festival, German Films also provides regular support for the presence of German films at the Shanghai TV Festival. In addition to its lineup of new German productions, screenings of F.W. Murnau’s undisputed classic The Last Laugh in Beijing and Chengdu feature live musical accompaniment by the Aljoscha Zimmermann Ensemble.

Euro Film Awards Turn to Youth

As 81 countries have submitted their contenders for the 88th annual Academy Awards–with Paraguay being represented for the very first time (Cloudy Times, directed by Arami Ullón)–Oscar’s much younger relative is gearing up for its own honors. During the Film Festival in Seville, Spain, the European Film Academy unveiled the candidates for the 28th edition of the European Film Awards.

Leading the pack is Paolo Sorrentino’s drama Youth: La Giovinezza with five nominations, including Best European Film, Director and Screenplay, with Actor honors going to Rachel Weisz and Michael Caine. Given its predominantly English-language dialogue, it is not surprising that this year’s entry by the man behind EFA and Foreign Language Oscar winner The Great Beauty was not submitted by Italy (co-producing countries are France, the U.K. and Switzerland).

EFA Best Picture nominees also submitted by their home countries for the Oscars are 2014 Golden Lion winner A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence from Sweden (co-produced with France, Germany and Norway, and written and directed by Roy Andersson); Deniz Gamze Ergüven’sMustang competing for France (though co-produced with Germany and Turkey), and Grímur Hákonarson’s Rams representing Iceland (a co-production with Denmark). Other contenders for the top EFA prize are The Lobster from Yorgos Lanthimos (U.K., Ireland, Greece, France and the Netherlands) and Victoria (written and directed by Sebastian Schipper, who received a directing nomination). Captured in one sole take, this real-time thriller was the big winner at the 2015 Deutscher Filmpreis with six Lola Awards. Nonetheless, Germany decided to deal with its past rather than contemporary lives and send Labyrinth of Lies to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences instead.

More than 3,000 European Film Academy members are currently voting, with results being tallied in time for the Dec, 12 ceremony in Berlin. The 88th Academy Award nominations will be announced live on Jan. 14, 2016, and the Oscars will be held on Feb. 28 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

Ymagis Moves on Russia and Greece

From Auckland (New Zealand), San Francisco (USA) and Paris (France) to Moscow (Russian Federation), Athens and Thessaloniki (Greece), software and technology connect one and all.

Going forward, Vista Entertainment Solutions’ (VES) software products will be sold and distributed by Ymagis Group/dcinex (YG/d) in Russia and CIS. This partnership facilitates important goals, the companies stated. Kirill Kuzmenko, general manager of YG/d in Russia, calls “the interconnected and total enterprise solution” inherent to the VES portfolio “a new and exciting opportunity for cinema exhibitors.” For VES, this agreement means continuing the “march toward predominant market share in the European cinema exhibition industry.”

After 20 years of designing software for exhibitors, VES cinema management now comprises 20+ modules, notes Mischa Kay, the company’s managing director for EMEA about selling an estimated one billion movie tickets annually across more than 4,000 sites in over 60 countries. “In-market knowledge and support has proven a recipe for success to assist and grow our business over its lifetime.” The same holds true for YG/d with 7,172 screens in Europe serviced (maintenance and NOC), and 6,401 installed under VPF contracts; with a connected network (satellite, DSL, fiber) of 3,300 sites. “Their local knowledge, presence, expertise and support,” Kay calls fantastic. “We couldn’t be more excited about working with Ymagis Group/dcinex and about adding the value of VES cinema-management software to more theatres in Russia.”

Meanwhile, YG/d outfitted the first three cinemas in Greece with Dolby Atmos. While plans call to equip additional screens for Village Cinemas, moviegoers at the Mall Athens and Athens Metro Mall as well as at Mediterranean Cosmos in Thessaloniki have been feeling every dimension with the “forward-thinking approach to the sound of tomorrow” of Dolby Atmos. George Christodoulou, chief executive officer of Village Roadshow Greece, further states, “Only those who embrace innovation will benefit, and we are extremely proud of the choices we’ve made.” The company owns and operates seven multiplexes and 69 screens in Athens and the Greek mainland. “Village Cinemas steadily invests in the development of new high-quality cinema centers and today it owns more than 40% of the market share.”

With more than 65 Dolby Atmos and Barco Auro 11.1 installations across Europe, Ymagis Group/dcinex can lay claim to being “the largest services company for advanced immersive sound technology systems.” In the first half of 2015 alone, their technical teams installed 18 Dolby Atmos systems in Germany, Denmark, France, Belarus, Ireland, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.
