'Justice League' fails to crack the $100 million mark
Warner Bros. won’t have much to be thankful for going into the holiday weekend, as latest DC Extended Universe offering Justice League failed to crack the $100 million mark over its opening weekend. Things started well on Thursday with $13 million but then topped out at $96 million, the lowest debut for a DCEU film by a $7 million margin.
Still, things weren’t all bad news for Batman and company. Justice League did well overseas, bringing in $185.5 million in 65 markets for a worldwide total of $281.5 million.
Behind Justice League in spot number two was the weekend’s spiritual (if not actual) victor, Wonder. Though it opened to $27 million against Justice League’s $96 million, that figure well exceeds expectations. Not to mention that Wonder’s budget was a heck of a lot lower than Justice League’s reported $300 million.
Thor: Ragnarok fell to third place in its third weekend, a $21.7 million gross bringing its domestic total to $247.3 million. Two of last weekend’s new releases round out the top five: Daddy’s Home 2 (weekend gross $14.8 million, total gross $50.5 million) and Murder on the Orient Express (weekend gross $13.8 million, total gross $51.7 million).
Landing just outside the top five was faith-based animated feature The Star, which opened $10 million on 2,837 screens. That’s not exact great, and Sony execs probably aren’t loving the fact that it’ll have to compete against Disney-Pixar’s Coco starting Wednesday. Still, The Star is holiday-based—it tells the story of the first nativity—so it’s probably counting on decent hold as we move into December.
Lady Bird, which secured 2017’s record for the highest per-theatre average three weeks ago, expanded from 37 screens to 238. It’s still performing quite admirably, to the tune of a $2.5 million weekend cume. Distributor A24 will take the film wide over Thanksgiving. Also expanding is Sony’s Roman J. Israel, which debuted on four screens to $65,000. Also new to theaters in limited release were The Breadwinner ($19,350 on three screens) and Sweet Virginia ($5,084 on a single screen).
