Event Cinema Association recognizes box-office achievements
The Event Cinema Association’s fifth-annual conference was held in London today at the Vue West End in Leicester Square, capped by the ECA Box Office Awards.
Sponsored by Encompass for the second year running, the awards recognize the efforts and achievements of the ECA’s global membership,
“The criteria are simple,” said Melissa Cogavin, managing director of the ECA. “Box Office Awards are open to ECA distributor members. 100,000 admissions wins a bronze medal, 250,000 admissions is a silver award and 500,000 admissions is a gold award.”
Cogavin added, “Every year we do this we are encouraged by the enthusiasm and number of medals to award to our members. It’s an honor to recognize how hard our members work throughout the year and at the ECA we want to grow the industry. We feel that this ceremony goes a long way to raising the profile as much as providing a well-deserved feel-good factor for all concerned.”
Encompass’ sales director Nigel Crow said, “It’s been a pleasure to support the ECA and their members today at the ECA Conference, and in particular the Box Office Awards. We feel that it’s important to recognize the effort and achievements of distributors of event cinema and Encompass are very happy to support all the winners today—they are to be congratulated.”
The winners this year demonstrate the true international nature of the event cinema industry, with medals going to distributors Exhibition on Screen and the Royal Opera House in the U.K., Nexo from Italy, Pathé Live from France, Piece of Magic Entertainment from the Netherlands, and a multitude of awards to Fathom Events in the USA, including the gold award for Pokémon The Movie—I Choose You! U.K. newcomer Trafalgar Releasing earned a silver award for “Dave Gilmour Live in Pompeii,” a music concert attended by nearly 400,000 fans in cinemas worldwide. A silver award also went to Piece of Magic Entertainment’s “Andre Rieu Maastricht Concert 2017.”
Normally, the Awards for Excellence recognizing the best exhibitors and outstanding contribution categories are handed out at the same time, but these will be given at the next Slate Day later in 2018. The focus this time was on box-office excellence.
The ECA Conference was supported by Gofilex, Eclair, CinemaNext, Motion Picture Solutions, Vue, Cineplace, Demand.Film, Magnutido, Managed Networks, Qubewire, NEP Broadcast Solutions, Fathom Events, More2Screen, Strike Media, Coca-Cola, Molson Coors, We Are Pops and Speakeasy Ice Cream. The event was attended by 200 industry professionals from the U.K., North America, Australia, Europe and the Middle East.
