How many companies make it to 50 years and find themselves stronger and more vibrant after their first half-century? Not many, but QSC, which started as “Quilter Sound Things,” has done just that. They’re firmly entrenched today as one of the most prolific and important sound companies in the world, with an array of award-winning products.

QSC has over 500 employees in several states in the U.S. as well as other sites around the globe. The company prides itself on collaboration and open communication. QSC also gives back to the industry. By being focused on other businesses and not entirely on cinema, the company is able to share technologies, products and resources. QSC has been an avid supporter of the International Cinema Technology Association, with several of its key employees serving on the ICTA board of directors. The Year of the Woman

Congratulations to the Top 50 Women in Global Cinema. This is the third year that this list has been compiled by Celluloid Junkie, and Film Journal International has agreed to publish their selections as well as have Dana Moutis of the Film Expo operations group volunteer to help organize the process, especially this time around as we are so aware of the #Me Too, Time’s Up and 50-50 by 2020 campaigns.

It is a truly global listing and ultimately doesn’t just celebrate the women on it but every amazing woman who works in the cinema industry and makes a difference. In upcoming issues of Film Journal International, we plan to publish in-depth profiles of a number of these honorees. So look for them and feel free to reach out to Dana with any suggestions you might have for next year’s Top 50!

The Rise of eSports

Contributing writer Rob Rinderman explores the topic of eSports in our May issue, via interviews with several of the major cinema-related participants and the beneficiaries of eSports’ trajectory. To say this is a growing trend and business is an understatement.

Just look at some of the statistics: Rinderman reports that estimated 2017 worldwide revenues for eSports were $655 million, a fivefold increase compared to 2012 eSports levels. Statista, the source for this figure, projects the eSports industry to reach $1.5 billion in annual revenue by 2020.

To really put this in perspective, Rinderman notes that an estimated 360 million viewers watched the “League of Nations” mid-seasonal invitational. That compares to the 111 million that tuned into Super Bowl LI in 2017 and 30 million viewers watching last year’s NBA finals.

The numbers are outrageous. eSports is attracting all levels of players, from amateur level to paying audience members when the pros play in major competitions for large purses. How this all connects to traditional movie theatres will be something to watch for in the future. We are certain you will find this article of great interest and relevance.

Excitement at CinemaCon

The 2018 edition of CinemaCon, the annual convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners, will offer a number of exciting firsts. The yearly “State of the Industry” session will feature the debut address by the new chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America, Charles Rivkin. (See page 142 of this issue for a very insightful interview with this former Jim Henson Company executive and veteran of the State Department.) Cinépolis CEO Alejandro Ramírez Magaña, the first non-American recipient of the prestigious NATO Marquee Award, will outline his plans for the brand-new Global Cinema Federation that he helped create. And a must-attend session will focus on Saudi Arabia’s historic decision to open the Kingdom to cinemas after a 35-year ban. Finally, a record-breaking eleven studios will be revealing their movie slates for 2018 and beyond. Get ready for a busy, rewarding and newsworthy week at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Remembering Stew Harnell

Last month, the industry lost one of the good guys when Stew Harnell passed away at the age of 79. Harnell was a very charitable individual who supported numerous nonprofits including the Will Rogers Motion Picture Foundation, where he served as a board member. He was a board member and active participant in Variety The Children’s Charity of Georgia. Other organizations that received his support were the Cinema Advertising Council, the American Film Institute and the National Association of Concessionaires.

In 1977, Stew founded Cinema Concepts, an industry leader in the creation and distribution of movie trailers and theatre advertising. He began his career at National Screen Service and eventually rose to executive VP and worldwide sales manager. We will miss you, Stew!
