CineEurope at 27: Barcelona confab offers movie previews and hot topics
The European movie exhibition community is in for a very full week when the 27th annual CineEurope convention commences on June 11 at the Centre Convencions Internacional Barcelona (CCIB) in Barcelona, Spain. Eleven studios will present preview footage of their upcoming films, and there will be three complete features screened. Plus, there will be an abundance of seminars on topics of vital interest to cinema owners and managers, along with a busy tradeshow, an awards ceremony and a plethora of social events. Delegates will leave the four-day event both sated and stimulated.
Participating studios include Entertainment One, Lionsgate, Paramount Pictures International, Sony Pictures Releasing International, Studiocanal, STX International, Twentieth Century Fox International, UniFrance, Universal Pictures International, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International and Warner Bros. Pictures International. Feature films being screened at the event include Disney and Pixar’s superhero action comedy Incredibles 2; Warner Bros.’ comedy TAG, starring Jeremy Renner, Ed Helms and Jon Hamm; and Lionsgate’s mystery A Simple Favor, starring Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick and directed by Paul Feig (Spy, Ghostbusters).
Delegates should arrive early for the valuable insights of Monday morning’s sessions. IHS’ David Hancock will moderate a panel on finding a wider audience for European films, with participants from the British Film Institute, Studiocanal and Nordisk Film Cinemas. Then, a prestigious group of top executives discusses global cinema trends: Stacey Snider, chairman and CEO, 20th Century Fox; Mooky Greidinger, CEO, Cineworld Group; Bret Kim, head of the Global Business Division, CJ CGV; JL Pomeroy, chief marketing officer, IMAX Corporation, and Tim Richards, founder and CEO, Vue International.
On Tuesday, the International Cinema Technology Association offers a series of focus sessions on the tradeshow floor. Topics include software, analytics and digital marketing; gaming and eSports in cinemas, and state-of-the-art theatre design.
Focus sessions continue on Wednesday with an analysis of the new direct-view displays and a discussion on how to grow the box office for event cinema, presented by Cineplace and the Event Cinema Association.
Thursday morning brings an especially timely panel, “Wonder Women—Reaching Out to the Female Audience.” With Celluloid Junkie editor Patrick von Sychowski moderating, participants will reflect on what more the industry can do to attract female moviegoers, especially after the 2017 success of female-centered films like Wonder Woman and Beauty and the Beast.
As always, CineEurope closes with an awards ceremony sponsored by Coca-Cola. This year’s honorees include Olga Zinyakova of KARO Cinemas, Patrick Wachsberger of Lionsgate, Jean-Pierre Decrette of Cinémas Gaumont-Pathé, and box-office champion Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Also during the ceremony, the first “CineEurope Gold Awards” will be presented to seven high-achieving industry executives: Jordi Casas of Kelonik, John Donnelly, formerly of Odeon and UCI Cinemas, Francesco Grandinetti of The Space Cinema, Shaun Jones of Cineworld Cinemas, Magda Lewicka of Multikino, José Manuel Tourné Alegre of Federación para la Protección de la Propiedad Intelectual, and Thomas Runfors of SF Bio.
