Indian blockbuster 'Dhoom 3' to be released in IMAX
IMAX Corp. and Yash Raj Films, India’s largest film studio, announced that the action thriller Dhoom 3 will be digitally re-mastered in the IMAX format and released in IMAX theatres across India and select global locations next winter.
The film marks the first Indian local-language production to be released in IMAX. The company currently has 14 IMAX theatres open or contracted to open in India.
Starring Aamir Khan, Dhoom 3 is the next installment in one of the most popular franchises in Indian box-office history. Also starring Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra and Katrina Kaif, the film tells the story of the adventures of Jai Dixit, a no-nonsense cop, and his scatterbrained partner, Ali.
“Our network growth in India has reached a point where we're now able to present local-language films in IMAX, which is paramount to our success in the region," said Greg Foster, chairman and president of IMAX Filmed Entertainment.
The local Indian film market currently ranks number one in the world for attendance and film production, with over 1,000 films produced a year and approximately 90% of revenues derived from non-English language movies. Recent reports project the country's film industry to grow from $3.2 billion in 2010 to $5 billion by 2014.
