Andes Films' Gentili earns ShowEast International Distribution honor

ShowEast will present its 2013 “International Distributor of the Year” award to Giovanni Gentili Fraticelli, owner of Andes Films, at the show’s International Day Awards Ceremony on Oct. 21 at the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa in Hollywood, Florida.

“It is a great honor for ShowEast to be able to single out Mr. Gentili for all he has done throughout his career as a respected and admired international distribution executive,” noted Robert Sunshine, executive director of the theatre exhibitors’ event. “You could not ask for a more dedicated leader whose passion and commitment to the industry has helped bring film to so many moviegoers in Latin America.”

Gentili began his career in the movie industry as the accountant for Universal Pictures in Chile. He then assumed the role of general manager for Universal until the joint venture between Universal and Paramount was announced in 1970. At that time, he became general manager for the newly created company CIC Chile, which distributed Universal and Paramount films. He was then transferred to Peru as the general manager for CIC Peru with the supervision of Bolivia and Ecuador. Gentili then went to work for Warner Bros. as the general manager for Argentina with the supervision of Uruguay and Paraguay. Columbia Pictures then offered him the position of general manager for Brazil and transferred him to Mexico as general manager with supervision of Argentina, Brazil and Colombia. He was then promoted to VP of Columbia TriStar Pictures for Latin America and was subsequently transferred back to Brazil.

Gentili was responsible for the 1996 joint venture between Buena Vista International and Columbia TriStar Pictures in the main countries of Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico) This joint venture is still in effect in Mexico. In December 1999, he retired from Sony Pictures Releasing International and opened a movie distribution company called Andes Films S.A. in Chile and Peru. In January 2000, Andes Films began distributing Sony, Disney and independent product, becoming one of the main movie distribution companies in each territory. Andes Films has operated in Chile and Peru for almost 14 years, where Gentili was joined by his son Gianni in 2006.

Gentili was honored for his achievements with a tribute by the MPAA for his contribution to the industry in 1999. In 2004, Andes Films was named Best Company of the Year and he was given the Peruvian Leadership Award. In addition, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Buena Vista International in 2006.

Past recipients of the ShowEast International Distributor of the Year award include: Martin Iraola, Vittorio Tamburini, Mauricio Duran, José Victoria Gomez, Griselda Fortunato, Rodrigo Saturnino and Horacio Altamirano.

Celebrating its 28th year, ShowEast 2013 will take place October 21-24 and will feature screenings of major holiday films, sponsored events, seminars and a tradeshow.
