Auro & Atmos: A status report
Since their introductions in 2012, Barco’s Auro 11.1 and Dolby Laboratories’ Dolby Atmos—two groundbreaking immersive audio formats—have each been embraced by the movie production community and seen dramatic growth in worldwide cinema installations. In late June, each company announced that more than 50 feature films had committed to utilize their respective 3D audio formats.
On July 31, Barco announced that leading theatre circuit Cinemark will deploy Auro 11.1 in more than 150 of its premium Extreme Digital (XD) screens worldwide. Cinemark will begin the worldwide deployment this year in all of its “tier one” markets, starting with North America.
Prior to the Cinemark deal, Barco had confirmed signed agreements for the deployment of over 200 Auro 11.1 installations worldwide.
Meanwhile. Odeon and UCI Cinemas Group, the owner of Cinesa cinemas, announced plans to equip 27 flagship iSense® screens with Dolby Atmos in Austria, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. The first phase saw seven UCI/Cinesa cinemas in Germany and Spain equipped with Dolby Atmos for the release of the Warner Bros.’ Man of Steel.
As of late June, 38 cinema screens had been equipped with Dolby Atmos in 15 countries across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. In addition, Regal (United States), SPI Cinemas (India) and Wanda Cinemaline Corporation (China) announced plans to install Dolby Atmos. These commitments brought the count of planned installations of Dolby Atmos to more than 200 screens globally, up from nearly 40 screens that had been equipped worldwide at the beginning of 2013.
Dolby Atmos debuted on June 22, 2012, with Disney and Pixar’s Brave. Major films released in Dolby Atmos include Taken 2, Life of Pi, Rise of the Guardians, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Mama, A Good Day to Die Hard, Oz the Great and Powerful, The Croods, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Trance, Oblivion, Iron Man 3, Star Trek Into Darkness, Epic, Man of Steel, Monsters University, The Heat, Pacific Rim, Turbo, The Wolverine, Planes, Elysium and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.
