'Ocean’s 8' is number 1

It was a weekend of (mostly) surpassed expectations, as new releases Ocean’s 8 and Hereditary proved hits for their respective studios. The former film grabbed the number one spot with $41.5 million, the highest debut of any film in the Ocean’s franchise. Hereditary snagged the number four spot with a $13 million debut, a high for distributor A24. The film reportedly cost a mere $10 million to make.

In between Ocean’s 8 and Hereditary in the top five are holdovers Solo: A Star Wars Story (weekend gross $15.1 million, total gross $176.1 million) and Deadpool 2 (weekend gross $13.6 million, total gross $278.6 million), with Avengers: Infinity War (weekend gross $6.8 million, total gross $654.7 million) rounding out the top five. Avengers: Infinity War’s $1.3 billion international gross brings its worldwide cume to within spitting distance of $2 billion; it should reach that mark, becoming only the fourth film to do so, within days.

New release Hotel Artemis, alas, didn’t have the same mojo as Ocean’s 8 and Hereditary. The Global Road release bowed to $3.1 million on just over 2,400 screens, for a disappointing per-theatre average of $1,309. The weekend’s highest PTA went to new indie release Hearts Beat Loud, which opened to $74,053 on four screens for an $18,513 average. Also new in limited release are Won’t You Be My Neighbor? ($470,000 on 29 screens), Believer ($144,000 on 32 screens) and Half the Picture ($7,529 on a single screen).

Internationally, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has its bow in 48 markets, grossing a total of $151.1 million. The film comes out in the US on June 22.
